Gifts and gift baskets in Cyprus
Cypriots are very proud of their cultural heritage, which stretches back more than 9000 years. However, you'll probably find that Cyprus today is more concerned with the events of the last 20 years than those of a millennium ago… Carnival is one of the best known Cypriot. Carnival Festivities take place 50 days before Greek Christian Orthodox Easter and is the beginning of Lent, a period of fasting before Easter. If you can’t go in person to Cyprus to celebrate Carnival with them, you can send a Neuhaus Tin Tin Box or Belgian chocolate cups. They’ll be fond of it! Here are some other gift giving tips to Cyprus:

BUSINESS GIFT GIVING IN CYPRUS

  • From food to flowers, choosing high-quality gourmet products for business gift-giving exhibits good taste and will more likely result in an acknowledgment.
  • If you’re unsure about how a recipient will accept your gift due to religious or ethnic differences, research their culture first! Like everything else in Cyprus, religion is split along the Green Line. The northerners are mostly Sunni Muslim, the southerners Greek Orthodox. During the holy month of Ramadan all Muslims must fast from dawn to dusk and are only permitted to work six hours per day. Fasting includes no eating, drinking, cigarette smoking, or gum chewing. Expatriates are not required to fast; however, they must not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public. So take it in account when sending a gift.
  • Cypriots are skilled negotiators. If you show you trust them by sending white wine with a thank you note after a business dinner, they’ll always appreciate it!
  • Cyprus is also famous for its fruit, which the government protects with a ban on imported products. So it’s a better idea sending a gourmet basket of nuts and candies.

PERSONAL GIFT GIVING

  • Gift giving is not an elaborate event. If you want to send a gift to a Cyprian friend, he will always appreciate a consumable gift such as a high quality chocolate or candies.
  • If you want to send flowers to a Cypriote’s house, be aware of not sending white lilies because they are used at funerals.
  • Cyprians generally not open immediately the gift when receiving it.
  • Food also reflects the divide in Cyprus: in the North you'll find mostly Turkish cuisine; in the Republic, Greek. So take it in account to when sending a gift – it is always nice to receive something not readily available to them.
