Gifts, flowers and gift baskets to Denmark
Denmark has a highly homogenous population united by a long history. Nevertheless, the Danes have always been open towards influences from outside, and this means that Danish cultural life is characterised by tradition and uniqueness combined with cosmopolitism and variety.

Here are some things to be aware of when sending a gift to Copenhague, Roskilde, Aalborg or to any city or village in Denmark:

BUSINESS GIFT GIVING IN DENMARK

  • Women are highly respected in business and generally receive equal pay and have access to senior positions. When sending a business gift to a business woman, keep in mind that they’re generally fond of fruit and sweet and above all… high quality chocolate.
  • Do not try to a business gift from mid June through mid August as many Danes are on vacation
  • Business cards are exchanged. Your business card should have the physical address of your company and not a post office box.
  • Danes prefer to get down to business quickly.
  • Communication is direct
  • Although the Danes are hard-working people, they prioritise their spare time highly. It’s not always necessary to send an office-gift. They will appreciate as well a good book, tea and snacks or a cd.

PERSONAL GIFT GIVING IN DENMARK

  • Marriage is not a prerequisite to starting a family. Many couples live together without legalizing the arrangement with marriage. But that doesn’t mean that Danes don’t offer Valentine’s gifts to their beloved. Or if you have a long distance relationship with a Danish young man, it would be a good idea sending him a romantic and relaxing breakfast basket or a sweet teddy bear.
  • Danes give gifts to family and close friends for birthdays and Christmas.
  • If you want to surprise a Danish friend for his/her birthdag, send good quality chocolates. A gourmet basket with a good quality wine makes also an excellent gift – however cannot be send from overseas because of the high taxes and strict alcohol laws.
  • If you are invited to dinner, it is polite to send flowers in advance of the event.
  • Gifts are opened when received
